Gold prices hit an all-time high as demand surged to the highest level since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 amid volatile financial markets in Europe.

Spot gold in London surged to above $1,230 a troy ounce, surpassing the previous record set in December last year.

Gold prices in euro terms also hit a fresh all-time high of €969 an ounce in late trading in London on Tuesday, up almost 26 per cent since the beginning of the year.

Traders and coin dealers said buying was exceptionally strong from German and Swiss investors. In Frankfurt, gold sellers said that demand late last week was three to four times normal levels. The spike appears to reflect concerns in Germany about the potential inflationary impact of the European Central Bank’s decision to buy up eurozone government bonds in the wake of the Greek debt crisis.

Michael Kramer, president of Manfra, Tordella & Brookes, a large New York-based coin dealership, said: “The demand has been huge overseas. Most of it is ending up in Germany.” Edel Tully, precious metals strategist at UBS in London, added: “Coin demand is so intense that supply is struggling to match”.

UBS, one of the largest bullion banks, said its gold sales desks in Geneva and Zurich had experienced the greatest demand for coins and small bars since 2008 last Thursday, when markets were shaken by contagion fears in the eurozone. The Austrian Mint has sold 108,000 ounces of Vienna Philharmonic coins in the past two weeks, more than the 89,100 ounces it sold during the first three months of the year.

Kerry Tattersall, marketing director at the Austrian Mint, which sells the popular Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin, said the mint was producing “as fast as we can”.

“It’s quite a spectacular increase in demand.” “We’ve put on a third production shift so we’re producing around the clock,” said Kerry Tattersall, the mint’s marketing director.

Jonathan Spall, a director of commodities at Barclays Capital in London, said gold was likely to hit a “fresh all-time high before the end of the week”. Outside the eurozone, dealers said that demand was also strong in North America.

Holdings in physically backed gold exchange traded funds are at record highs after some ETFs last week experienced their biggest inflows in over a year.

Global investors have been increasingly turning to gold since 2008. Gold traditionally performs well during times of financial distress or in times of US dollar weakness.

Global investors, led by the US, last year bought a record 228.5 tonnes of gold in the form of bullion coins, up from 77.4 tonnes in 2000, according to GFMS, the London-based precious metals consultancy.

Gold is relatively scarce in the earth, but it occurs in many different kinds of rocks and in many different geological environments. Though scarce, gold is concentrated by geologic processes to form commercial deposits of two principal types: lode (primary) deposits and placer (secondary) deposits.

Lode deposits are the targets for the “hardrock” prospector seeking gold at the site of its deposition from mineralizing solutions. Geologists have proposed various hypotheses to explain the source of solutions from which mineral constituents are precipitated in lode deposits.

One widely accepted hypothesis proposes that many gold deposits, especially those found in volcanic and sedimentary rocks, formed from circulating ground waters driven by heat from bodies of magma (molten rock) intruded into the Earth’s crust within about 2 to 5 miles of the surface. Active geothermal systems, which are exploited in parts of the United States for natural hot water and steam, provide a modern analog for these gold-depositing systems. Most of the water in geothermal systems originates as rainfall, which moves downward through fractures and permeable beds in cooler parts of the crust and is drawn laterally into areas heated by magma, where it is driven upward through fractures. As the water is heated, it dissolves metals from the surrounding rocks. When the heated waters reach cooler rocks at shallower depths, metallic minerals precipitate to form veins or blanket-like ore bodies.

Another hypothesis suggests that gold-bearing solutions may be expelled from magma as it cools, precipitating ore materials as they move into cooler surrounding rocks. This hypothesis is applied particularly to gold deposits located in or near masses of granitic rock, which represent solidified magma.

A third hypothesis is applied mainly to gold-bearing veins in metamorphic rocks that occur in mountain belts at continental margins. In the mountain-building process, sedimentary and volcanic rocks may be deeply buried or thrust under the edge of the continent, where they are subjected to high temperatures and pressures resulting in chemical reactions that change the rocks to new mineral assemblages (metamorphism). This hypothesis suggests that water is expelled from the rocks and migrates upwards, precipitating ore materials as pressures and temperatures decrease. The ore metals are thought to originate from the rocks undergoing active metamorphism.

Farallon Mining Ltd. recently announced new high grade gold zones outside the current mineral resource at the G-9 Mine at the Company’s Campo Morado property in Guerrero State, Mexico.

High grade precious metal intercepts at G-9 have been reported in various news releases over the years, most recently in the Company’s December 16, 2009 news release in which an intersection of 13 metres of 20 grams of gold was announced. Since that time, the Company has been actively investigating the geological continuity and stratigraphic location of these intercepts, particularly since underground drilling became a component of the ongoing exploration program at G-9. Farallon commented that it is now apparent that there is a definite geological and stratigraphical correlation to the high grade gold and silver intercepts.

Dick Whittington President and CEO of Farallon, said: “This is an exciting new development for the Company as it shows that the G-9 mine and the Campo Morado District have the potential for high grade precious metal resources as well as the current high grade zinc resources upon which the G-9 mine was built. These resources are incremental to our recently announced mineral resources, and though small in tonnes, are high in precious metals content. Our challenge now is to find more of these high value resources and to define a metallurgical program to maximize their recovery.”

Located to the west of and adjacent to Newstrike Capital Inc.’s Aurea Norte Project in Guerrero State, Mexico, the G-9 mine is a 1,500 tonnes per day, underground, zinc mine with important by-product credits of copper, gold, silver, and lead.

The Guerrero Gold Belt (GGB) is a significant emerging gold mining district hosting a gold bearing iron skarn-porphyry mineralizing system. The district includes Goldcorp’s Bermejal, Nukay and Los Filos deposits, and Gleichen Resource’s Limon-Los Guajes deposit. The GGB has an inventory of approximately 14 million ounces of gold, which continues to increase with ongoing exploration and/or mine development activities. All GGB participants are currently active in the area. Newstrike Capital Inc’s management team was instrumental in the discovery of over eight million of those gold ounces.

The following is a history of mining activities with The Guerrero Gold Belt.

1924

Gold was discovered at Xochipala in 1924 by the Franco Urias Family. They operated a small family owned mine and mill until 1988 and a total of 360,000 Au oz were produced. Today, Xochipala remains largely unexplored by modern exploration methods

1938

Minera Guadalupe SA de CV began underground mining of the Nukay gold deposit. Mining operations were interrupted at the beginning of Second World War

1947

The original Nukay Mine went into production in 1947 as a small underground cut-and fill gold mining operation. Gold occurred in what was then described as manto and fissure filling vein deposits and about 500,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 18 gr/ton Au (290,000 Au oz) were extracted between 1947 and 1964 (historical records).

1950-1960’s

Several small mining operations begin operating in the area, mostly for epithermal Ag-Pb-Zn from high-grade narrow veins (El Anono, Vianey) and for amethyst and antimony (Rodeo, General). The Todos Santos mine, a disseminated Au-Cu skarn was the first disseminated intrusion hosted gold and copper discovery made. It was drill delineated during this time by Minera Comicosa While grades and reserves for that period are not available, in the last five years of operation Comicosa did extensive exploration in an attempt to delineate sufficient reserves for a 500 tonne per day operation. They developed a non NI43-101 historical resource estimated at 1.5 million tonnes grading 1.5% Cu, 80 g/t Ag and 0.5 g/t Au. It was then that a leaching plant was

1961

Declining head grades and a lower gold price caused operations to cease at Nukay

1983

Minera Nukay SA de CV restarted mining activity at Nukay, initially with underground operations, then open pit mining and the construction of a Merrill Crowe treatment plan

The 47,600 hectare Morelos Mineral Reserve is created during the Administration of President Miguel de la Madrid. All claims in good standing in the area, such as where the Nukay, Xochipala and Bermejal projects are currently located, remained in the hands of private owners, as did a few other small internal claims.

Industrias Peñoles S.A., a major Mexican mining company acquired rights to the Bermejal area and formed a JV with Newmont Mining. Aggressive exploration was carried out between 1986 and 1993.

1987

Enrique Miranda forms Minera Nukay to expand the original Nukay Mine, then producing 100 tons per day from the underground mine workings. Discovery during road building of high-grade gold skarn mineralization at surface prompted opening of the Nukay open pit.

The Peñoles-Newmont JV announces discovery of the Bermejal gold deposit in 1987 but market conditions at the time delay further development.

1993

Minera Nukay is taken over by Miranda Mining Corporation (“MMC”). Mining of the Nukay and La Aguita deposits is by conventional open-pit mining methods utilizing front-end loaders and trucks. Underground mining is carried using traditional cut and fill methods. Ore from the underground mines is trammed to the surface via a 320-metre long adit and trucked to the mill or to a stockpile at the mine site.

The concept of the Guerrero Gold Belt (GGB) was conceived of by then MMC chief geologist Alfonso Martinez-Vera. MMC begins the search for a JV partner began in order to develop the larger potential of the region.

1994

Miranda and Teck sign a joint venture to explore and develop the Nukay open pit mine and surrounding claims. The Nukay plant is expanded.

The Teck-MMC JV discover skarn and intrusion hosted disseminated gold mineralization at Los Filos from

Peñoles-Newmont completes a prefeasibility study on their Bermejal deposit in 1994. Continuing poor market conditions leads to a negative decision and Newmont backs out of the JV.

1995

The Mexican government announces plans to privatize all mineral reserves in Mexico through a lottery process. The Morelos Reserve is later divided into a North and South portion by the government in preparation for sale to multiple bidders.

1998

Miranda and Teck entered into a joint venture agreement to bid on the Morelos National Reserve block which the Mexican Government was privatizing Morelos National Reserve blocks. In July 1998 The joint venture company Minera Media Luna (MML) is successful in acquiring the Morelos North (26,346 ha.) block. Morelos South (16,887 ha.) was awarded to Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (“IMMSA), a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (“GM”), one of the largest mining and railroad companies in Mexico.

1998 to 2002

The Miranda-Teck joint venture continued exploring the GGB, resulting in the discovery of a new iron skarn-gold bearing deposit, El Limón located 15 kilometres north of Los Filos.

November 2003

Wheaton River Minerals (Goldcorp) acquired 100% of Miranda Mining Corporation including Teck’s interest in Los Filos and 21.2% of El Limón gold deposit. At the time of acquisition, Los Filos had been explored with over 400 drill holes totaling 90,000 metres of drilling and using a cutoff of 0.5 grams of gold per tonne (“g Au/t”), estimated a measured and indicated resource of 38.4 million tonnes grading 1.44 g Au/t (1.77 million ounces) and inferred resources of 11.0 million tonnes grading 1.35 g Au/t.

At El Limón, Teck had completed a resource estimate based on 35 reverse circulation drill holes and 25 diamond drill holes totaling approximately 10,000 metres of drilling. Using a cut off grade of 0.8 g Au/t, inferred resources totaled 15.9 million tonnes grading 3.35.

The Nukay operation had produced approximately 90,000 ounces of gold over the last five years at an average cash cost of US$164 per ounce

March 2005

Goldcorp Inc. through their Mexican operating arm, Luismin, acquires of the 2.4 million ounce Bermejal Gold Deposit. Bermejal is located 2 kilometres south of Los Filos The immediate proximity to Los Filos will allow the use of a joint processing facility for ore from both deposits

May 2005

Aurea Mining Inc (now Newstrike Capital Inc) holder of goes public. The Aurea team includes key players from the former Miranda Mining Corporation (MMC) team including Enrique Miranda as President and CEO, MMC chief geologist Alfonso Martinez-Vera (presently Technical Director, Servicio Geologic Mexican and former president of the Association of Engineer, Metallurgists and Geologists of Mexico) and David Euresti-Reyna. Aurea controls 100% interest in over 81,000 contiguous hectares of highly prospective mineral claims strategically located in the Guerrero Gold Belt.

January 2008

Commercial production for Los Filos commenced January 1, 2008. The Los Filos mine consists of two open pit mines (Los Filos and El Bermejal) and underground (which was previously known as the Nukay mine) with common heap leach, wet plant and ancillary facilities. Los Filos is forecast to produce an average of 300,000 ounces of gold per year. Source: Goldcorp

August 2009

Gleichen Resources Ltd. entered into an agreement to acquire 78.8% of the Morelos Project including El Limón, from Teck Resources Ltd.

December 2009

Newstrike Capital Inc. entered into an agreement to acquire 21.2% of the Morelos Project from Goldcorp Inc. The 21.2% interest is represented by 7.2034% Class A ‘participating’ shares and by 14% Class G ‘carried’ shares in the Morelos Project. Gleichen Resources Ltd. has a right of first refusal in respect of Goldcorp’s interest in the Morelos Project; exercisable for 90 days from the date it is advised of the terms of the Newstrike agreement.

There’s an old saying that goes “gold is where you find it.” This may seem overly simplistic, but it makes sense when considering that many companies have had success recently by exploring near and beneath past workings in Mexico. After all, historic mining regions are historic for a reason. Spanish conquistadors mined metal deposits in Mexico for over 300 years, but thanks to modern exploration technologies Mexico still offers tremendous discovery opportunities.

Veins of gold and silver have stretched their way across the history of Mexico since Columbus discovered this “New World.” Mexico is home to many historic mining districts, one of which is the Valley of Oaxaca. Located at the convergence of the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain ranges, the history of Oaxaca traces its roots as far back as seven thousand years, when the land was occupied by as many as 18 diverse ethnic groups. Three of the most dominant groups were the Mixtecs, the Mixe and the Zapotecs. During the Zapoteca era, economic activity flourished with increasing hunting, fishing, mining, and artisan work fashioning silver and gold. Along with its ideal location as the gateway to Central and South America, the abundance of gold in Oaxaca is the reason for Oaxaca’s colonial era gain in prominence.

In the mid 1500’s, Hernán Cortés sent men into the Oaxaca region in search of gold and a waterway to the Pacific Ocean. They never found the waterway, but gold would serve as a driving force throughout Cortés’ life and Oaxaca’s history. In the late 1800’s, over 50 near surface mines were in production as the area grew into one of Mexico’s most important gold producers.

Newstrike is the largest holder of mineral claims in Oaxaca, the key assets being 74,000 hectares in Taviche, Lachigalla, and Ejutla mining districts. Recent discoveries in Oaxaca have been sizable, Newstrike’s claims are in proximity to Fortuna Silver’s San Jose project, which contains over 124 million ounces of silver and 1.05 million ounces of gold. Newstrike’s Etujla II claim is also contiguous on its southern boundary with Aura Silver’s Alma Delia property, host to a recently discovered Higo Blanco silver mineralized jasperoid breccia which occurs in one of the many veins of the Taviche system.
